Naval Air Station Oceana, VA
Naval Air Station Oceana (NAS Oceana) is a military airport located in Virginia Beach, VA. Built in 1943, it’s the U.S. Navy’s only master jet base on the East Coast. NAS Oceana is also known as Apollo Soucek Field, named for the Navy Test Pilot who set the global altitude record in 1930 of more than 43,000 feet.
NAS Oceana has become one of the largest and most advanced air stations in the world, covering 6,820 acres, including Dam Neck Annex. Its four runways are designed for high-performance aircraft, three of them measuring 8,000 feet in length and one totaling 12,000 feet. Many Naval Aviators and Naval Flight Officers are stationed here, and they fly approximately 219,000 training operations annually. NAS Oceana became home to the F/A-18 Hornet in 1999, and the airport was once an alternative landing site for NASA’s Space Shuttle.
